Can Convenience Foods Be Healthy?
I am so excited to share with you all some of my favorite healthy convenience foods that save my life every day! I think we all have that same thought that “healthy” and “convenience” shouldn’t be in the same sentence. However, with the food industry’s skyrocket in creativity, there are so many healthy options out there designed to help you eat healthy when in a pinch.
Of course, not all convenience foods are healthy. And yes, I love helping people meal plan and learn how to cook healthy meals, but having an emergency stash of frozen or shelf-stable healthy foods can make your life so much easier at times.
Here are a few of my favorite convenience foods:
- Protein Bowls
My all-time favorite frozen meal idea is a protein bowl. They are gaining popularity in the food market, and rightfully so! They generally contain a good balance of protein, veggies, and complex carbs to nourish your body and provide energy.
My favorite options: Healthy Choice, Tattooed Chef, Real Good, and Smart Made!
- Dark Chocolate Covered Fruit
Confession time: I really dislike making dessert. I love eating it, but making it is a whole different story! However, I’m usually craving something sweet after dinner, and these chocolate covered fruit options hit the spot.
My favorite brand is Tru Fru – they have endless options including dark chocolate & peanut butter covered bananas to white chocolate covered raspberries (delish!).
- Microwaveable Brown Rice & Quinoa
My second least favorite thing to do is cook brown rice or quinoa from scratch. Call me lazy, but with two kiddos and hectic lifestyle, I don’t have the time right now to cook my brown rice for 20 minutes! So what do I do? I get microwaveable brown rice and quinoa. My absolute favorite brand so far has been Seeds of Change! They have tons of flavors, including Chia & Kale and Spanish Rice.
- Smoothie Packs
Putting together a quick smoothie couldn’t get any easier! Many are packed with veggies and fruits that combine flavor and textures well without the stress of creating your own concoction. Plus, there are tons of fun new flavors to try! My favorite: Pitaya Smoothie Packs or Dole Smoothie Packs.
- Frozen Pizzas
Who doesn’t love pizza?! It’s easy, fun, and so delicious. However, it is time consuming to make on your own and costly to order every night.
You can find pre-made pizzas or pizza crust made from cauliflower, broccoli, and even chickpeas, all of which contribute to higher fiber intake. Top your pizza with your favorite sauce, protein, and veggies, or opt for a pre-made pizza altogether if desired!
My favorite brands: Banza, Cappello’s, and Stonefire.
- Healthier Mac & Cheese
There’s nothing better than comfort food to soothe the soul! There are so many companies out there creating noodles with beans, chickpeas, lentils, and even spinach or beets. With this new creation comes the development of new and improved boxed mac and cheese options.
My favorite: Banza Chickpea Mac & Cheese – it’s packed with fiber and protein, which will keep you full and feeling energized. I recommend adding a side of steamed veggies or fresh fruit to make the meal complete, but overall this is a great choice when you’re craving comfort and have limited time.
Key Takeaways:
Eating healthy does not have to be complicated! There are so many options out there that will help you sustain your busy life without needing to order takeout or eat frozen burritos every night.
